We were introduced to adventurer photographer Odin Woods when he won a competition run with The Ghost Road Track.
Located in the North West corner of the South Island of New Zealand The Old Ghost Road Track is a forgotten gold miners' road, revived as a mountain biking and tramping trail. The 85km-long Old Ghost Road traverses majestic native forest, open tussock tops, river flats and forgotten valleys.
We did a Q&A with Odin on the Robert Point Track...
Last outdoor adventure - what was the journey?
Hiking and biking the back country Mt. Oxford area. Theres so much to explore in that area, chuck your bike on your back and hike to the summit, the ride down is one of my all time favourites. Once your done, walk in and explore some of the epic waterfalls for a swim!
Next journey - where and why
Next up is the Old Ghost Road. This will be my second time though OGR (it’s that good) and I’m going it with a bunch of guys who haven’t been through yet, so I’m super stoked to see how much they love it! Waking up for sunrise at Ghost lake hut is right up there on my list of awesome.
Tell us about the most handy 3 hardware items you had on your journey and why they were so good
My camera - Because the only bad shot is the one you didn’t take. Good knife - You may barely use it but when you need it, you really need it. Multi tool (with chain breaker) - it might be the difference between riding out or walking for the rest of the day.
Your favourite Go Native snack or meal or flavour
I LOVE the raspberry and apple fruit bars and the idea of being able to throw a 24hour food bag in your pack and know you’re covered for the whole day breakfast to dinner is ace!
What are your 3 top tips for multi-day expeditions
Plan you’re route and let someone know where and how long you’ll be gone. Pack sensibly, carry what you’ll need to look after yourself, good water proof jacket and plenty of layers. Buy a PLB and carry it with you, its no use in the cupboard at home.
Lastly... where are you in this image?
My wife and I opted for the slightly less touristy option of walking up to Franz Josef glacier this winter and hiked the Robert Point track. It's so rad, Swing bridges, rock slabs, roots, waterfalls, definitely worth a look if your in the area!
